Chandigarh - India's Maiden Planned City

Chandigarh is a City based in North-Western India. It is the joint capital of India's two states - Punjab and Haryana. This city has got its name from Chandi mandir, a temple of a Hindu deity located near the city.

Chandigarh is Independent India's first planned city. After Delhi which was built during the British Raj, Chandigarh came into existence in just 3 years after India's independence in 1947. It was designed by an European Architect - Le Corbusier who helped in constructing the new planned city. Chandigarh was inaugurated on 7th October 1953 by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of Independent India. 

Like any planned City, Chandigarh is divided into many sectors and blocks, which have several residential and commercial complexes. Chandigarh has its own set of attractions, such as Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake.

Rock Garden is a unique attraction in itself. It was built by Nek Chand Saini in 1957. It consists of many Dolls and Sculptures made of industrial waste, home waste and other such discarded items. It was converted into a large park in 1976. It is spread over an area of 40 acres (16 hectares). Lakhs of visitors visit this Garden on a daily basis.

Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh

Sukhna Lake is basically an artificial reservoir created in 1958 by placing a Dam on Sukhna Choe river than originates from the Shivalik Hills that are part of the Himalayas. Sukhna Lake has an area of 3 sq.km. It has many shops and recreational facilities across it banks. Water sports like Boating, Rowing, Sailing etc. are available within the Lake. Sukhna is a sanctuary for many exotic migratory birds during Winters.

Chandigarh has Buses, Taxis and Auto-Rickshaws that ply across the city. it has the largest number of vehicles per capita in India. Wide, well-maintained roads and parking spaces all over the city ease the local transport. There are Bus services available that connect Chandigarh to neighboring states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi. Chandigarh Airport has scheduled commercial flights to the major cities of India. Chandigarh Junction railway station provides connectivity to most regions of India.
