Ho Chi Minh - In Honor of The Leader

Ho Chi Minh City is a major city in southern part of Vietnam, a country in South-East Asia. It is the most populated settlement of that country. It was formerly known as Saigon, named after the river that flows across the city. The name was changed to Ho Chi Minh in 1976, in honor of the great Vietnamese Revolutionary and Statesman, who fought for freedom and unification of Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh is the Largest Financial Hub and the Busiest International Transport hub of the country. The city is well-known for its historic landmarks, narrow lanes and great nightlife.

One could start exploring the city by visiting the Independence Palace. It is officially known as Reunification Convention Hall. It was built in 1966. It was the very place where the Vietnam war ended, resulting in unification of the country in 1975. After the reunification of Vietnam, the building continued to serve as a government and presidential office until 1976, when the capital of South Vietnam was officially moved to Hanoi, and the government’s functions were relocated. The palace is now preserved as a convention hall for state events, and also a museum that is open to the public, and is a popular tourist attraction in the city.

Besides Independence Palace, there are several other tourist attractions. One of them is Saigon Central Post Office, built during the French colonial rule in the late 19th century. Architecture of this building seems to have Gothic, Renaissance and French influences. On the outside wall of the post office there are several plaques commemorating important scientists and engineers, who contributed to the development of the communication technologies of the time. Inside the Saigon Central Post office are two painted maps that were created just after the post office was built, the first one located on the left side of the building is a map of Southern Vietnam and Cambodia (when it formerly was part of Vietnam). The second map is of greater Saigon of that period.

Saigon Skydeck building offers a birds' eye view of Ho Chi Minh city. From the 49th Floor, the building offers a magnificient view of the entire city, through a glass-enclosed observation deck. The building is officially named as Bitexco Financial Tower. Through the observation deck, one can get 360 degree views of the City's streets, Saigon river, Ben Thanh market and Notredame cathedral, along with access to high-tech binoculars and Ao Dai Museum that displays Vietnam’s traditional dress.

About 44 KM (1.5 Hours drive) from Ho Chi Minh, are located Cu Chi Tunnels. They are an immense network of connecting tunnels located in Cu Chi District of Vietnam and are part of a much larger network of tunnels that underlie in much of the country. These Tunnels were used by Viet Cong soldiers as hiding spots during the Vietnam War and also serving as communication and supply routes, hospitals, food and weapon caches and living quarters for North Vietnamese fighters. The tunnels were highly effective while fighting against the American forces and South Vietnamese military. Various types of Booby Traps are visible in many of these Tunnels, that were setup to trap and kill Enemy forces who dared to intrude into Viet Cong's territory.

Vietnam offers 90 Day E-Visa to Indian passport holders. Ho Chi Minh is serviced by Tan Son Nhat International Airport, located within the city's boundaries. VietJet Air and Vietnam Airlines offers connections from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru (Bangalore) and Hyderabad to Ho Chi Minh. Air India and Indigo fly from Delhi and Kolkata respectively to the city.

Wayanad - Nature with Beauty

Wayanad is a district in the north-east part of Kerala, a state in south-western part of India. It is the only plateau region of Kerala. Kalpetta is its capital town. It is 85 KM (3 Hours drive) from Kozhikode, a major city of that state. Wayanad district is bordered by Karnataka to the north, east and north-east, Tamil Nadu to the south-east. In addition, it is bordered by other districts in Kerala such as Malappuram to the south, Kozhikode to the south-west and Kannur to the west and north-west.

Wayanad has more than 20 places worth sightseeing as a Tourist. One could start with Edakkal Caves. The Edakkal caves are two natural caves at a remote location situated at 1200 metres (3900 feet) above sea level. Inside the caves are stone carvings on the walls, believed to be drawn from 6000 BCE to 1000 BCE, which is equivalent to Neolithic era of Stone Age time. These caves were discovered by the British in 1890. The carvings are of human and animal figures, tools used by humans and of symbols yet to be deciphered, suggesting the presence of a prehistoric settlement. Some Historians claim that those drawings are somehow connected to Indus Valley Civilization.

To enjoy natural beauty, Wayanad has a few beautiful waterfalls. Two of them are Soochipara Falls and Kanthanpara Falls. Soochipara Falls, also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfalls, is a three-tiered waterfall. It is 200 Metres (656 Feet) and offers a cliff face that is used for rock climbing. Kanthapara Falls has a total height of around 30 Meters (98 Feet). Kanthanpara Falls can be seen like a silver thread when it is viewed from Soochipara Falls.

Pookode Lake is a scenic freshwater lake in Wayanad district. It is situated within evergreen forests and mountain slopes at an elevation of 770 Meters (2526 Feet) above sea level. It is 12.5 KM (25 Minutes drive) away from Kalpetta, the district capital. It is spread across an area of 8.5 Hectares (9.15 Lakh Square Feet) and with a depth of 6.5 Metres (21 Feet). It is the smallest and highest elevated freshwater lake in Kerala. For tourists, it offers activities like pedal-boating and a perimeter trail to walk on, with a lush backdrop of trees.

Kalpetta has very good road connectivity with the rest of Kerala and neighboring South Indian cities. NH766 connects Kalpetta with Kozhikode and Mysore. State Highways connect Kalpetta with Ooty in Tamil Nadu and Madikeri in Karnataka. Buses are available to Wayanad from Bangalore, Mysore, Kozhikode and Kannur. The nearest airport is Calicut International Airport, about 91 KM (3 Hours drive) from Wayanad. This Airport has multiple connections to Domestic and International destinations.

Kolkata - Bengal is Calling

Kolkata is a Major City in the Eastern Part of India. It is the State Capital of West Bengal. During British Rule in India, Kolkata was capital of the country until 1911, when it was later shifted to Delhi. Kolkata was earlier known as Calcutta, when the name got changed in 2001 due to political reasons. The city is associated with many of the figures and movements of the Bengali Cultural Revolution. It was Hotbed of the Indian Independence Movement. 

Kolkata is home to institutions of national importance, like Academy of Fine Arts, Asiatic Society, Geological Survey of India, Botanical Survey of India and Zoological Survey of India. Kolkata's port is India's oldest operating port. Four Nobel laureates are associated with this city. Kolkata is popularly known as the "City of Joy". 

There are many places worth sightseeing in Kolkata. One could start with Victoria Memorial, a large marble monument in central part of Kolkata. It was built between 1906 and 1921 by the British. It was built in honor of Queen Victoria, who was Empress of India from 1876 to 1901. It covers an area of 26 Hectares (64 Acres) of gardens. It is now a museum under administration by the Indian Government. Victoria Memorial is built of white Makrana marble. It has 25 galleries, containing paintings of various British officers and members of their royal family as well as prominent Indian freedom fighters.

Howrah Bridge is a notable architectural wonder spanning across the Hooghly river in the city. The Bridge connects Kolkata to Howrah. It was completed and opened in 1943. It is a suspension type bridge made entirely of Steel. Total length of the Bridge is 705 Metres and its width is nearly 26 Metres. The Bridge is 82 Metres high from the river flowing below. The road built through the bridge has total 6 Lanes. Nearly 1 Lakh vehicles and about 1.5 Lakh pedestrians commute throught this bridge on a daily basis.

Science City is a science park in Kolkata. It was established in 1997. It is a vast premise that offers visitors to understand various topics related to science in a simple language without much of technical jargon. It has blocks related to Outer Space like Earth Exploration Hall and Space Odyssey. Besides that, there are other areas worth visiting like Maritime Centre and Science Exploration Hall.

Kolkata has several Hindu temples that are popular across India. One of them is Dakshineswar Kali Temple, dedicated to Maa Kali, a Hindu goddess. It was built in 1855. Within the temple premises, there are mini-temples of Shiva, Radha-Krishna and Kirtana.

Belur Math is located in Belur, on the opposite side of Hooghly River. It was built in 1897. It is headquarters of Ramakrishna Math and Mission, founded by Swami Vivekananda, a popular Hindu Monk and philosopher who lived in the 19th century. Swami Vivekananda established Belur Math by placing holy relics of Shri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa (his mentor) at Belur Math premises on 9th December 1898. There are four temples built within the complex, dedicated to Ramakrishna, Vivekanand, Sarada Devi (spiritual consort of Ramakrishna) and Brahmanand (a direct disciple of Ramakrishna).

Kolkata is very famous for its Annual Hindu festival - Durga Puja. It is also known as Durgotsava or Sharadotsava. The festival is celebrated to honour the goddess Durga and her victory over Mahishasura, a vile demon in Hindu mythology. It is celebrated in the month of Ashwin as per Hindu calendar. It lasts for 10 days and occurs between September to October of gregorian calendar. The entire city is decorated with Pandals hosting the idol of Durga. There are long lines of devotees waiting to take a glance of the goddess for each Pandal. One must visit Kolkata during this time to experience the festival and culture of Bengal.

As Kolkata is a metropolitan city, it is well-connected by Road, Rail and Air. Kolkata is connected to other major cities of India like Delhi, Hyderabad and Chennai via several National Highways. Kolkata is serviced by Five Railway Stations - Kolkata, Sealdah, Howrah, Shalimar and Santragachi that connect the city to other parts of India. Kolkata's sole airport -Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is 15 KMs (45 to 50 Minutes drive) from the heart of the city. The Airport has excellent connectivity that connects Kolkata to major cities in India and overseas.

Pune - Heartbeat of Maharashtra

Pune is a city in the western part of Maharashtra, a state of India. Pune is 145 KM (3 Hours drive) from Mumbai, the commercial hub of India. 

Pune is the largest city in Maharashtra by area, spanning 516 Sq. Km. Pune is one of the largest IT Hubs in India. Many Top IT Majors like Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Cognizant etc. have built large campuses in and around Pune. It is also one of the most important Automobile and Manufacturing Hubs of India. Pune is also called as "Oxford of the East", as there are many Colleges and Universities situated in and around the city.

Pune has many sightseeing attractions to look out for. There are many Hindu Temples one can visit to pay homage. The most popular temple is Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Mandir. It is dedicated to Hindu Deity Ganesha (Ganapati). It was built in late 19th century. The construction of the Temple is so simple that all the proceedings in the Temple along with Ganesh Idol can be seen even from outside. The Ganesh Idol is 2.2 Metres Tall and 1 Metre Wide. It is adorned with nearly 40 KGs of Gold. The Temple is situated in the centre of the City, with local shops and market adjacent to it.

Chaturshringi Devi Temple is located on a hill at Gokhalenagar, near Senapati Bapat Road in Pune. It is said to have been built during the reign of Shivaji Maharaj - founder of the Maratha Empire. The Temple is 90 Feet (27 Metres) High and 125 Feet (38 Metres) Wide. There are more than 200 Steps one has to climb in order to reach the shrine of Goddess Chattushringi. Within the temple premises there are also idols of Goddess Durga and Lord Ganesh.

The Most Important Landmark of Pune is Shaniwar Wada. It is a Fort built in 1732 by the Peshwas as Seat of the Maratha Empire. The Marathas ruled from there until 1818, when the British defeated them and annexed their kingdom in order to expand their rule in India. The fort itself was largely destroyed in 1828 by an unexplained fire, but the surviving structures are now maintained as a tourist site.

Almost 1.5 KM (6 Minutes drive) from Shaniwar Wada is Mahatma Phule Museum. It is a small museum built in 1875. It exhibits historical objects such as Handicrafts, Old Weapons and Taxidermy. It is located at Ghole Road in Shivajinagar area of Pune. It is surely worth a visit if you are in Pune.

Pune is well-connected by Road, Rail and Air. Many Private and State Transport Buses connect Pune to Major Cities in Maharashtra and its neighboring states. Pune Junction is a Major Railway Hub as many inter-city Trains pass through the same. Pune's Airport is 10 KM (25 Minutes drive) from the heart of the city.
