Nainital - Hills and the Lake

Nainital is a Hill Station in the North Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is also the judicial capital of Uttarakhand, as the High Court of that state is located there. It is located in Kumaon foothills of the Himalayas. It is 300 KM (6 Hour drive) from Delhi, the national capital.

Nainital gets its name from Naina Devi temple, located in the heart of the city. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Sati, a Hindu deity of marital felicity and longevity. Sati is one of the forms of Shakti, the Supreme Goddess in Hinduism. Adjacent to the temple is Naini lake, which is famous among tourists who visit the hill station. Boat Rides, Paddle Rides and Yatchs are available for touring across the entire lake.

Mall Road is a popular shopping area of Nainital. Anybody who wants to shop for local handicrafts, clothes, ornaments, spices, eatables etc. must surely visit there.

Just 2 KM (10 Minutes drive) from Naini Lake is a famous attraction called Eco Cave Garden. The Garden is a cluster of naturally formed rocky caves. The Garden offers a majestic view of 6 caves formed in the shape of animals - Tiger, Panther, Bats, Porcupine, Flying Fox and Apes. A musical fountain is available in the Garden, which enhances the beauty of the place with audio & visual effects. The Garden is lit with old-school petroleum lamps to keep the authenticity of the place. Tourists can visit the Garden, between 9.30 AM to 5.30 PM, all days of the week.

Nainital does not have its own railway station or airport. Various National and State Highways connect Nainital to other parts of North India. The nearest Railway Station is Kathgodam, which is 36 KM (1 Hour 20 Minutes drive) away. The closest airport is Pantnagar Airport, which is 72 KM (2 Hour 10 Minutes drive) away. From there, Indigo airlines offers limited flights to Delhi and Jaipur.
